This week the Canadian Open. First played in 1904, this is the third oldest continuously running tournament on the PGA tour . . . after the ‘other’ two Opens. The first champion was Jack Oke, who took home $60 for his efforts. Ryan got just shy of $1.7 million last year.
This will be the event’s second time at the TPC Toronto. Held the week before the U.S. Open and just after the Memorial, the field is always a bit of a scramble. Besides the returning Champion, ALL the Canadians will be there. This is a qualifying event for the Open Championship, so it is possible we will see some ‘names’ enter who have yet to earn their spot to Royal Birkdale.
FUN FACT: Two golfers have won the “Triple Crown” of National Opens in the same calendar year . . . the U.S., Canadian and The Open. Tiger in 2000 and Lee Trevino in 1971. Some refer to the “Triple Crown” as winning three Majors in the same year . . . which would be Ben Hogan in 1953 and . . . Tiger in 2000.
