This week the Women’s United States Open. An actual Major Championship as opposed to those other . . . well . . . you know. First played in 1946, that inaugural running was a match play affair where the late, great Patty Berg was the winner. Starting the next year it went to stroke play. Patty won $5600 which was pretty good money in 1946. Maja took home $2.4 million, which is pretty good and a whole lot of krona. This will be the site for golf at the 2028 Olympics.
FUN FACT: The dominance of international players on the LPGA has been a fact and a subject for debate. In 2007, for the first time, U. S. players were a minority in the Open, where Cristie Kerr won. In 2008, Inbee Park became the event’s youngest winner ever, just a few days short of her 20th birthday.
