This week . . . The Open Championship. The last Major of the year for the men . . . the oldest golf tournament in the world. First played in 1860, it was three rounds on the 12 hole course at Prestwick Golf Club. Willie Park Sr. beat Old Tom by two strokes. For professionals only that first year, there was no prize money, just a belt with a silver buckle. In 1863, prize money was introduced, £10 to be split between second, third and fourth place. The winner still just got the belt. The Claret Jug was introduced in 1872, the first golfer to have his name inscribed was Young Tom Morris.
Part of the Grand Slam of golf, two golfers needed the Open Championship to be members in that club, Ray Floyd and Byron Nelson.
FUN FACT: Young Tom Morris not only was the first to win the Claret Jug, he got to keep the original trophy, the belt, after winning the Open three times.
