Founded in 1938 as the Greater Greensboro Open, the first Champion was Sam Snead who took home $1200 for a five stroke win over Johnny Revolta. This event has been a fixture on the tour schedule ever since. Originally played in April or May, it was moved in 2003 to the end of the season. This is the last event before the start of the FedEx Cup.
FUN FACT #1: In 1965, Sam won this event for an eighth time at age 52. A record for most wins at the same event and the oldest player to win on the PGA Tour. Both records still stand . . . He got $11,000 for that last win.
FUN FACT #2: At this event in 1961, Charlie Sifford became the first African American golfer to compete on the PGA Tour. He led after the first round and finished in a tie for fourth.
