This week we have an extra-premium event . . . (extra-premium?? sort of like more betterer??) This is a select field, a 36 hole cut and a $25 million purse . . . with the winner getting $4.5 million.
This event was conceived by the PGA Tour as a big money event they owned . . . as opposed to the Four Majors, none of which they own or control. First played in 1974 as the Tournament Players Championship at the Atlanta Country Club. The first winner was Jack. It moved around a bit on the calendar and on the schedule finally settling at Sawgrass in 1982. Always a big purse, Jack got $50K in ’74 . . . good to see the tournament has kept up with inflation.
FUN FACT: Sort Of . . . In 2020, it was at this tournament the PGA Tour shut down for COVID. The first round was played and Hideki Matsuyama was in the lead shooting 63. After it was cancelled, half the purse was paid out in equal parts to everyone in the field. Yep, it is the six year anniversary of everything going to hell because of COVID.
NOT SO FUN FACT: In 2005, during the final round, Bob Tway put four in the water at #17 on his way to carding a 12.
