To Florida for Arnie’s event, Orlando – so much of the field will be commuting from home. This is a $20 million signature event, which means a limited field with a 36 hole cut to the top 50 or those within 10 shots of the leader.
This event evolved from the Florida Citrus Open, which was first played in 1966. Lionel Herbert won that inaugural event, the last of his five PGA tour victories. Arnie won here in 1971.
FUN FACT: Lionel won the 1957 PGA Championship, the last running conducted as match play; converting to stroke play in ’58 . . . His older brother Jay won the PGA in 1960.
Arnold put his name on this event beginning in 2007. This tournament has always drawn the big names and the list of past champions is a walk through the HoF . . . Tiger has won here eight times . . . but isn’t playing this week.
