This week back to the PGA Tour with the Waste Management Open . . . or a lot of day drinking with occasional golf. The best attended event on the PGA Tour, the five days of the tournament will draw a half million spectators. They will sell over a million beers . . . experience tells us some people are having more than their fair share.
This event started in 1932 as the Phoenix Open. The first champion was Ralph Guldahl . . . not familiar? He won 16 times on the PGA Tour, including three Majors and is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Ralph won $600 . . . Thomas took home $1.6 million.
With 90+ years of history there have been a lot of notable champions and memorable moments. Scottie has won here twice, as has Brooks, who continues his reintroduction to the Tour this week. Past Champions include Byron, Ben, Arnold, Jack, Johnny and Phil . . . who shares the course record with Mark Calcavecchia. Tiger had a hole in one on 16 . . . but never won. In 1949, Ben Hogan lost in a playoff and then while driving home had his near fatal car accident.
FUN FACT: Happy Gilmore notwithstanding . . . there has been exactly one hole in one on a par four in tour history. Yes, it happened here. Andrew Magee, thinking he wouldn’t reach the green, teed off on the Par 4 17th with the group ahead on the green. The ball rolled on the green, caromed off Tom Byrum’s putter and in to the hole.
