This week the Canadian Open. First played in 1904, this is the third oldest continuously running tournament on the PGA tour . . . after the ‘other’ two Opens. The first champion was Jack Oke, who took home $60 for his efforts. Bob got just shy of $1.7 million last year.
This will be the event’s first time at the TPC Toronto. Recently renovated, reviews have been mixed to generally positive. Held the week before the U.S. Open and just after the Memorial, the field is always a bit of a scramble. Besides the returning Champion, Rory and of course ALL the Canadians will be there. This is a qualifying event for the Open Championship, so it is possible we will see some ‘names’ enter who have yet to earn their spot to Royal Portrush.
Fun Fact: Two golfers have won the “Triple Crown” of National Opens in the same calendar year . . . the U.S., Canadian and The Open. Tiger in 2000 and . . . Lee Trevino in 1971. Some refer to the “Triple Crown” as winning three Majors in the same year . . . which would be Ben Hogan in 1953 and . . . Tiger in 2000.
